Vintage – All About The Hunt

Inside Flying Worm Vintage

A little while ago I paid a visit to Omaha, Nebraska with a friend for a shopping day. I came across an old, rough-looking brick building with big black letters that said vintage with little flowers decorated all over the letters. Along with the unique exterior the store had a quirky name called “The Flying Worm Vintage.” Now here is a good tip, never let the outside of a store determine the contents of what’s inside. I wasn’t expecting much from the outside, until I entered the store and realized I had hit a gold mine of vintage.

I love digging through bins of old scarves, sifting through racks of jackets and sweaters, but the best part is when you find that one “golden piece” that almost seemed meant for you. I used to love going to the Goodwill and finding Ralph Lauren sweaters when I used to look super preppy back in high school. Since then my style has changed, but I still love to wear a good Oxford shirt, L.L. Bean duck boots, and J. Crew statement necklaces every once and a while.

Inside Flying Worm Vintage

When I first entered the shop, I went immediately to the fur and or faux fur coats hanging in the center of the shop, didn’t find anything there. Then, for some reason I was attracted to the rack of fringe jackets. I knew that fringe was making a comeback so I was interested in maybe finding a good suede or leather fringe jacket. Remember, be careful when it comes to fringe unless you are going for the John Wayne-Texas ranger look. In my opinion, black fringe is the best way to go. I may be biased because I am a lover of practically everything black, but I find it the easiest to wear and match. I found this black suede fringe jacket (pictured below) with silver zippers on the sleeves and a silver western style belt around the bottom of the jacket. I could tell that it was definitely vintage by the style of the jacket and the sheer weight of it. The jacket had a late 80s – early 90s vibe because of the large shoulders, which also made the jacket a lot heavier…definitely not a summer jacket unless you want to be roasted alive. The jacket was in good condition and to my surprise it was from Montréal, stated by the tag on the inside.

I brought the jacket home and had a fun little photoshoot with it. I like fringe, but I’ve always been afraid to wear it. I decided to go out of my comfort zone and wear it despite what other people thought about it. The jacket made me happy and I liked it and that’s all that mattered. I would wear this jacket to class and I would get tons of complements on it. Plus I felt pretty cool wearing it… might I even say I felt a little bit bad-ass. Put me in this jacket and give me some black aviators and I could rule the world. That’s another thing I love about vintage, each item has its own story and we bring it back to life when it finds a new home so the story can continue. Whenever I look at a vintage piece I wonder where it came from, who wore it, and what did it “see” or what’s its life story? Sometimes it’s fun to live in the past and reminisce about the clothes and everyday items people used to use and wear.

Savannah Day 2

Day 2 of my Savannah adventure started off with my first ever ferry ride across the river to get to the convention center. My mother was going to an event there and I just tagged along. I stood at the front of the boat and hung on to the railing instead of sitting inside because your first time should be out by the water, feeling the breeze, and waving to the passersby in the other boats. I really wanted to do the whole Titanic thing, but the captain was right there and I think I would have gotten yelled at.

This is right outside the convention center and you can see most of downtown Savannah from there. I could even see my hotel!

After taking the ferry back to downtown Savannah I decided it was time to do a little sight seeing and shopping. Savannah has so many cute little boutiques, it feels very Parisian-like there. I also love the Spanish Moss, it’s almost hauntingly pretty.

Upon walking down the streets of Savannah I discovered a shop called Satchel. Right away I knew that it would be a good store since the name started with Satchel. The smell of leather immediately hits you as you walk in, which is one of my favorite scents. I mean, who doesn’t love the smell of a new leather bag or shoes or even a new car? I quickly learned that it was a custom purse making store with also pre-made bags ready for purchase. I had looked at their leather wall which shows all the colors, textures, and designs they have in their leather and saw a crocodile embossed leather in a rich chocolate brown color. I had the croc embossed leather paired with a plain distressed leather in the same color in a fold-over clutch style of bag. I chose to go with a fold-over clutch because I had been looking for one all over the place is a croc design, but could never find one, so why not make my own? I think I stayed in the store for over an hour discussing the ideas for my bag and just talking about fun stuff. The store was so homey and comfortable, I feel like I could have stayed there all day.

In the store you not only see all the bags and leathers, but you also see their production area too. I came in on the weekend and they only do production during the week, but it was still cool to see the behind the scenes look at where they create the bags. The staff there was so friendly, especially one girl who helped me figure out my bag. The girl was an alumni from the Savannah College of Art and Design, which was one of the colleges I was interested in touring. (I will put the link to their website at the bottom of the page)

While doing some damage in the stores I took pictures of the beautiful buildings. The architecture reminds me of when I was in France last spring. I loved strolling down the sidewalks and lucky me that I didn’t get a sunburn during the whole trip. I believe one of the best things about traveling is getting to walk around the city. I’m a very visual person and getting to walk outside on a nice day is one of the most fulfilling things to do on a trip.

Savannah, Georgia Day 1

My day started off kind of rough by having to get up at 3:00am with only about a good half an hour of sleep the night before. I wanted to arrive in Savannah, Georgia sometime in the early afternoon, which meant I had to take the earliest flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta since there is no direct flight from Minneapolis to Savannah.

Soon after takeoff, I noticed from the window in the isle over that the sun was rising from the east. As hard as it is to get up early in the morning, it’s worth it to see the sunrise, especially when you’re above the clouds and everything seems calm and peaceful.

Upon arriving in Savannah I notice that the vast majority of trees were either palm trees or Spanish moss, which I found quite beautiful. Being from the Midwest region of the U.S. I rarely see these types of trees. I remember the first time I visited Georgia, the first palm tree I saw, I went up and touched it. I know I sound silly, but when you see something you’ve only seen in movies and then you get to see it in real life, it’d kind of a surreal moment

Even though Savannah is actually quite small it is full of sweet little squares or gardens. Some of the streets are so old and well kept that it almost feeling like your are on a movie set or gone back in time. I also love Savannah for how historically rich it is.

I knew that sweet tea was a popular drink down south, but I didn’t know that ordering an ice tea with lemon would be such a big deal down there. I went out for brunch and asked for an ice tea with lemon because being from the north that is what we drink when we drink ice tea. I immediately got a “humph” sound from the waiter, almost saying how could you not order a sweet tea. I learned that if you go for brunch down south you either order a sweet tea, mimosa,or Bloody Mary.

Luckily, I am a huge fan of seafood and decided to try a southern style sandwich called a shrimp po-boy. Now I’m sure there is somewhere in Minnesota I can get this style of sandwich, but nothing beats the taste of fresh seafood. I was told by a cab driver I had that a lot of people will catch their own fish, crab, and shrimp off the coast. Now of course I have been fishing before, I come from the land of 10,000 lakes, but there was something cool about being able to catch your own seafood for dinner.

February Beauty Favorites

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair

After washing my face at night I tend to get dry skin, so in order for my skin to be moisturized and looking healthy in the morning I use the Estée Lauder Night Repair. I have definitely seen a difference in my skin after using this product. My skin looks a lot healthier the morning after I use it. This products is a big part of my night skin care routine.

Drybar Hair Products

screen-shot-2017-03-02-at-5-13-40-pmMy hair is forever changed by these products. The Drybar hair products are amazing and they work so well for my hair. The gateway product to this brand is definitely the Detox Dry Shampoo. If you don’t know, a dry shampoo is a sprayable powder that soaks up excess oil and freshens up your hair in between washes. Also their heat protectant products are amazing. My hair is naturally fizzy and very curly, but I choose to blow-out my hair so it is easier to take care of and these products make my hair so silky smooth without damaging the strands. I would also recommend their round brushes, I use the Double pint one because I have a lot of hair. I have yet to visit one of their salons and I’m dying to go. All I ask is that someday they bring one of their salons to Minneapolis and soon!

Origins Matcha Madness Face Mask

I’ve used hundreds of face masks before, but none have made my face feel more revitalized and refreshed as this one. This is also one of the most unusual face masked I’ve used because it comes in a powder form and you add water to activate it. Now there is one thing that may put you off from this and it is that the smell is not the greatest. When you mix it with water and put it on your face it may have an acquired smell. Personally, I can look past that because the mask makes my skin feel great. Also be warned that this face mask is green so you will look like the Grinch while you are waiting for it to dry or as I was told I looked like Fiona from Shrek. I like to mess around with my friends when I put this face mask on.

Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick & Lipliner in Pillow Talk

screen-shot-2017-03-02-at-5-17-57-pmI’ve been obsessed with this lip color for the longest time. I was introduced to this beauty brand by a British Youtuber named Amelia Liana, who raved about the lip liner (also you should check out her channel, she is one of my favorite Youtubers/bloggers). When I tried it, I knew I was hooked for life. Recently, they came out with the lipstick form of the color and I have been wearing it all the time. If I don’t know which lip color I should put on my lips I always go for this one because I know it will look good. It’s the perfect nudey-pink lip color that will work on multiple skin tones.

L’Occitane Soothing Fluid

screen-shot-2017-03-02-at-5-07-20-pmFor a morning moisturizer I recommend this soothing fluid from L’Occitane. Despite its name, it is not a fluid or a serum, but rather a light lotion for the face and neck. I really enjoy the fresh clean scent of this product. After washing my face in the morning I use this lotion to put under my makeup because it absorbs into the skin quickly and doesn’t leave your face feeling greasy. I haven’t known this brand for very long, but I can already see changes in how my skin looks and feels after using their moisturizers. Another one of my favorite products by them is the lavender body lotion. It smells absolutely amazing and lavender is one of my favorite scents. I often put the lavender lotion on my hands when I’m studying or about to go to sleep because it has a soothing scent that relaxes me. For some reason I think that their lavender lotion smells different from all the other lavender lotions I’ve used, which makes it all the more addicting to me.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush and Strobe Lighting Powder

One of my favorite beauty products to apply is blush and highlight. I love how blush can bring life and color into a face. Makeup is about light and shadows, putting the correct amount shading in the right places can make a world of different for how makeup can look on a person. This brand is my favorite for blush and highlighters. Not only are the shades gorgeous, but the packaging is too. For the blush, the technique they use is called miscelare, which means “to mix” in Italian giving it a marbled looking effect. During the production of the blushes they mix the perfect amount of pigment and powder to create the iconic marble effect, no blush looks the same! Their highlighters I particularly like because they capture the light better than most highlighters. So often highlighters can leave you looking like you’re sweaty or greasy, but that can also be the user’s fault for application, but this highlighter has the perfect about of pigment to give you and angelic glow without the sweaty looking shine.  In the above picture the blush I use is in the shade Diffused Heat and the Highlighter in the shade Brilliant.

Trend Alert: Corsage Choker

**Beware, this choker may make you want to learn to tango.**

Spring is right around the corner and with spring comes the rebirth or awakening of life after winter and what better symbol of spring than a flower? Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2016 line came out with the idea of corsages that are not just for prom.

The flower detail gives the choker or brooch a romantic feel that’s also fun and flirty. It’s versatility is endless from going on a romantic date in Spain to going to a music festival in California. If you’re looking for a statement necklace, then this is the one for you.

I tried out the necklace and let me tell you…I’m in love. Whenever I wear it I feel like I’m about to go dance the tango or visit a café in Barcelona.

Staying Fit While In College

I am not the greatest person at staying fit, but these are some of the things that I do to stay happy and healthy. So here are my six tips for staying fit in college.

Take Study Breaks To Do Simple Exercises

It’s important that every once and a while you take a break from staring at your computer screen or having your nose in a textbook. Your body needs breaks to recuperate  and refresh. So if I’m studying and I don’t have time or don’t want to walk all the way across campus to go to the gym I take study breaks and do in-home/dorm exercises. I recently bought two fifteen pound weights to keep in my room so I can keep my arms toned. I will use my weights and do simple arm strength exercises while taking my break. If you don’t have weights, then use your own body weight to do exercises like squats, push-ups, crunches, and lunges.

Study/Quiz Exercise

Another way of doing in-home/dorm exercises is when you are studying or quizzing yourself on terms or formulas and every time you get an answer wrong do a 30 sec wall sit or 10 squats that way you will get some exercise and remember the correct answer next time.

Stay Hydrated!

Drinking water is one of the most important things you could do for your body. I’m prone to headaches and I know that it is most likely due to my lack of water intake so I bring water bottles around with me everywhere. College can get stressful and it gets easier to become dehydrated or sick, but by drinking more water you will be more awake and less likely to get sick. Plus your body will thank you inside and out by keeping your skin looking healthy.

Take Longer Routes To Class

If you get up early for class, like me, then you will likely have more time to get to class. Some days I like to take longer routes because it might be a nice day or I want to go for a walk or I’m feeling a bit tired and need more time to wake up. I enjoy going for walks because it’s the easiest way to get exercise without hardcore sweating and it can be quite peaceful.

Take Fun Classes At The Recreational Center/Gym

Getting myself to exercise on my own can be quite difficult, especially since I had to leave my family’s personal trainer back home in Minnesota after going to college. I find that sometimes I need another person to push me to work my hardest. Ever since I started taking classes at my campus gym, I’ve had more fun working out. I am and avid spin class taker and cardio dancer. Of all the classes I took I found these to be the most fun and the ones that made me sweat the hardest. Taking classes are the best way to exercise without feeling like you’re exercising, especially when you have a friend group along with you.

Wear Cute Gym Attire

I know that if I wear cute gym clothes I feel better about myself and I don’t feel sluggish at the gym. Also if you buy cute workout clothes, then you are more likely to go to the gym and show off your little gym ensemble. Especially for me being a fashion student I find that when I see myself in the mirror at the gym wearing cute workout clothes, it motivates me even more. If the clothing part is not your thing, then buy cute workout accessories like a cute water bottle, gym bag, or sneakers.

What I’m Loving: Neck Scarves

I studied French my whole high school career and now I’m studying it in college. I was lucky enough to travel to France last spring to witness the culture of their country. I was immediately enchanted by the street corner cafés, shops, beautiful monuments, and museums. But most of all I loved the chicness of the Parisian people. The French know a way of dressing so simple, but looking put together at the same time.  Never had I thought that a t-shirt, jeans, flats, and a scarf could look so good. I like to think that I can dress Parisian-chic by saying “I just threw this on,” but in reality I carefully planned out my outfit.

In my efforts to look Parisian-chic, I’ve been wearing neck scarves and dressing simple, but sophisticated. When I went to France, I dreamed of coming home an elegant and cultured woman just as Audrey Hepburn did in the movie Sabrina. I love how neck scarves make me feel suddenly more elegant, like there’s a little extra spice to my outfit. I think neck scarves are the new “necklace of choice”. Sure at first they can feel constricting, but after lots of time wearing them I’ve grown to love them. It’s mind-boggling how many ways you can wear them. I’ve seen people wear them on their wrists, tied to their bags, and even tied around the loop holes of their pants. I think that a neck scarf is the simplest way to make an outfit immediately become more interesting. I’ve collected a few over the years from trendy boutiques, thrift shops, and from my mother’s closet (psst, don’t tell her). I consider this accessory to be timeless because it has been worn throughout so many decades and has never really been considered “outdated.” Plus it looks good on almost every age. So for the neck few years to come, I think I’ll be channeling my inner Parisian when life needs a little class and elegance.

Can Redheads Wear Red?

RED, the color of fire, passion, anger, and love. Red is perhaps one of the most intimidating colors to wear. With such an important color, why are we so afraid to wear it? Nobody tells a person with brown hair that they can’t wear the color brown so why can’t redheads wear red? For years there’s been a myth that redheads can’t wear the color red…or yellow….or orange. Perhaps it’s not the fact that redheads can’t wear red, but it’s the fact that we are afraid to. We already stick out enough with red hair, so why bother to stand out more? There’s been excuses like “the colors wouldn’t meld with our hair, we would look odd, and I feel like I look like I’m on fire.”

The key to wearing red is finding the right shade. Just as makeup, finding the right color for your skin tone is important. If you are a redhead with paler, porcelain skin, then I recommend a blue under-tone red. Blue under-toned reds tend to be the brighter, a more true red while more pinky under-tone reds are better for tanner skin.

I love red because it’s a very powerful and passionate color. The best way to wear red, in my opinion, is lipstick. I have a soft spot for red lipstick, I can’t tell you how many shades of red lipstick I own. It’s my secret weapon for feeling more confident or to give my look a more romantic feel. If I had to wear one outfit for the rest of my life it would be a stripped shirt, black pants, black leather jacket, and red lips.

Down below are my top red lipsticks that I wear the most.

Not to be a little bit biased, but I’ve noticed that NARS has a good selection of red lipsticks that compliment my skin tone. I find that the velvet matte lip pencils are perfect for travel since they are so thin and light. Also, I find that they are quite pigmented, which means less layers and a longer life span for the lipstick. If I want a matte red lip that doesn’t fade or disappear after eating or drinking, then I suggest the Sephora brand lip stain because it has the amazing power of lasting all day and won’t come off even if you rub your lips on something. I used to use this one when I was a cheerleader in high school for games and it would last the whole time even with shouting, drinking water, and sweating. I use it even on days when I want to wear red lipstick, but have classes or lectures all day long and it still lasts through all that.

So if you’re a redhead out there thinking you can’t wear red, I say “Why not?” If you’re unsure, then start small, maybe wear red lipstick or lip gloss then ease into wearing a red top or skirt. Eventually you’ll be loving red and wearing it more often regardless of your hair color.

Trend Alert: Mid-Heel Shoes

Want the height, but not the embarrassment of almost rolling your ankle? On the hierarchy of heels the mid-heel is pretty beginner, it’s an upgrade from flats or a flat with a slight wedge. But in this case these shoes are not for practicing in, they’re for trendiness. It’s a comfort meets fashion shoe, perfect for the office or running around town.

Crown Jewels

One of my absolute favorite shows is Reign. Since I have a passion for both history and fashion, Reign was a best of both worlds for me. I am also a huge fan of Meredith Markworth-Pollack’s costumes she creates for Reign. I love how she mixes modern and historical clothing together to give the show a little bit of a modern twist to otherwise  dark, heavy clothing of that time period. One of my dreams was to be on that show or at least be an extra just so I could wear one of the costumes. Sadly, our time with Reign has come to an end. The show canceled its fifth season on the CW, but the show will still be airing its fourth season tonight February 10, 2017. So in honor of my favorite show and beloved characters I have some headpieces and “little crowns” inspired by the show so all of us can feel like queens.
